Human Perspective poster exhibition at Luonnos

The Paimio Sanatorium 90 – Human Perspective poster exhibition has been on display in Paimio Sanatorium this summer. The exhibition can also be viewed in Helsinki at Luonnos on 25 August – 1 October 2023.

Paimio Sanatorium and the Association of Visual Communication Designers in Finland, Grafia, turned 90 this year. To celebrate the anniversary, they organised an international poster competition for visual communication professionals and students. The Paimio Sanatorium 90 – Human Perspective poster competition attracted 444 entries from Finland and abroad. In addition to the award-winning works, the exhibition features 24 posters selected by the jury for the exhibition.

Ilkka Kärkkäinen (so_helsinki), the chairman of the jury said that “The winning entries represent a broad and high-quality range of genres, with a controlled and elegant typographic poster and a strong and arresting abstract work sharing the first prize. The winning posters also represent classic graphic design as well as airy and playful illustration styles.”

Grafia, then known as Suomen Piirtäjäliitto, was founded in May 1933. In the summer of the same year, Paimio Sanatorium opened. Over the years, the building has gained international recognition as a landmark of modern architecture.

Aino and Alvar Aalto’s vision of the relationship between humans, nature, architecture and design was unique in its time. How can this relationship be interpreted in our time and in today’s changing environments? How has the perspective held out and what is its future outlook? The title of the competition sought answers to these questions through visual means. The competition was organised in cooperation with the Finnish Design Shop and so_helsinki. Visual design and exhibition design of Human Perspective poster exhibition is made by Ilkka Kärkkäinen.

Paimio Sanatorium 90 – Human Perspective poster competition Ist prize was shared between Petri Henriksson (Finland/Norway) and Anna Meck “Holistic Healing” (Germany). 3rd prize went to Rosa Aamunkoi (Finland, USA). Honourable mentions were granted to Jolanda Jokinen, Linda Linko and Tuukka Tujula.
