African Fashion Week showcase: Designer’s speech by Omolara & Mini Fashion Show (2nd floor in the main exhibition space)

The African Fashion Week Helsinki (AFWH), founded in 2018, is above all an event, but also a community and association that strives to make African cultures known in Finland. The association’s focus is on supporting and highlighting fashion professionals with an African background. The annual fashion show organized by AFWH has been a public success, gathering a large number of spectators at venues like Gloria and Tiivistämö.

Samia Mohamud presents African Fashion Week. Mohamud is the founder of African Fashion Week, a feminist with an African background and an ambassador for sustainable fashion. She was born in Somalia, grew up in Jyväskylä and Mikkeli, and found the colors of being African in Helsinki: “Africanness in me is genuine and colorful.”

Omolara Odediran is a fashion designer who started working as a designer in 2012. 13 years ago, a young Nigerian woman had a business idea: She wanted to build a fashion company that sells products that have a positive impact on both the environment and socially. She is the creative director of F’JOY. F’JOY is a Couture house that focuses on sustainable fashion and combines African patterns with Nordic design. The name “F’JOY” is derived from the Nigerian name “Fayokemi” which means “pamper me with joy”. In addition to Omolara’s speech there is a mini-fashion show that presents Omolara’s designs. The language of the event is English.
