Suvi Järvelin: Tomato
–Print and textile designer Suvi Järvelin’s Tomato exhibition opens the creative design process from sketches to results. In the exhibition, an interesting design is created from a familiar and simple thing – tomato.
The starting point of the exhibition is to explore how a visual concept can be implemented based on a strict delineation, and whether strict framing can even free up creative work. The theme of the exhibition is a familiar visual element, a tomato. The pure shape, bright colour, mundanity and simplicity that tomatoes represented, tend to delimit the visual concept.
But how can this familiar and simple object be used to create diverse print designs and surfaces? How can the essence and shape of a tomato be studied through sketches, patterns and surfaces as well as a visual concept in the form of an exhibition? What kind of thoughts arise when there is a topic but no idea about the result? What is particularly essential about a tomato?
The exhibition shows the progress of the visual concept design process from sketches to the final result. Reflecting the sketches and final works gives insight into the designer’s thinking: what does the process involve before it is finished? Visualization of the design process dives into the everyday work of a design professional and illustrates different methods.
